FREE Career Advice Session for Creatives with John Patterson

Focusing on working in a post-pandemic world

untitled-7278-Edit-2.jpg

John Patterson, Artistic Director of Angel Theatre Company, will facilitate this event for actors, directors and writers. He is an experienced practitioner with a career spanning over 25 years and during the session will seek to explore how we re-find our motivation and confidence in order to pick up from where we all left off in March 2020! John will share his own experience of how the pandemic has affected his career and seek to help others find positivity and progression routes in what continues to be difficult times for our industry. The session will conclude with a Q & A where participants are invited to raise whatever concerns they may have about working in our sector. This event is kindly hosted by our friends at The Bread & Roses Theatre.

Sunday 10th April 7pm-9pm at

The Bread & Roses Theatre SW4 6DZ

Spaces are strictly limited, allocated on a first-come-first-served basis and must be booked in advance by emailing theangeltheatreco@gmail.com with the subject: YOUR NAME - CAREER SESSION

SUNDAYS IN THE PARK WITH ANGEL

The current world health crisis that has led to UK theatres going dark has had a devastating impact on all those working in our industry. We thought of ways we could continue to plan and create, in preparation for when venues reopen and came up with an idea that allowed us to discover and explore new writing as well as giving creatives an opportunity to work and network safely by maintaining social distancing guidelines.

Since staging a piece of new writing has long been on our agenda, we decided that it would be an ideal time to continue the search. We gathered a selection of new plays that we felt had the potential to be produced and cast them from our database of professional actors. Over the summer months we held a workshop and rehearsed reading of each play. Sessions took place in the open air on Sundays in London parks, maintaining whatever government social distancing guidelines were in place at the time of each meeting.

The benefits of us facilitating creativity to continue at such a challenging time for the arts are obvious! We kept our trained minds, bodies and voices active and these gatherings also provided an opportunity for creatives to meet new contacts, network and share not only their concerns, but hopes for the future of our jobs and industry as a whole. All these sessions were LIVE and we met in person, not via zoom. We deplore the suggestion that theatre may have to become recorded and streamed to survive. This will not become our “new normal” as, for us, theatre is a LIVE EVENT or it is simply not theatre!

Please note that the lighting in this production is operated brilliantly by our talented Stage Manager, Francesca Coleman, not by Oliver Fretz. The lighting was designed by John Patterson and Karl Swinyard, following Beckett’s strict instructions in the text. Oliver is credited in the programme as an LX technician (not operator/designer) as he he programmed the lighting board. Therefore, any praise in the below reviews attributed to Oliver actually belongs to the aforementioned persons!

OPPORTUNITY FOR WRITERS

In early 2018, we plan to produce a piece of new writing and over the next few months will be welcoming submissions from playwrights for consideration. This is a rare opportunity to have your work performed at an Off West End venue by a professional theatre company. We will fully finance the venture and you’ll share in any profits the production generates. Our company has excellent links within the industry and your work will potentially be seen by some very influential people.

In the first instance, please email us your biography, a character breakdown and a synopsis of your play, which will be considered by John Patterson, our Artistic Director. If he would like to take your proposal further, we will then ask you to submit a full script. Please note, we are only considering plays that have not yet had a professional premiere.

The deadline for submissions is 30th November 2017. Please email us at theangeltheatreco@gmail.com with your name and ‘Script Submission’ in the subject bar.

We look forward to receiving your ideas!

EAVESDROPPING

Angel Theatre Company will present Eavesdropping, an original piece of theatre. The production consists of a variety of scenes, each varying in length. Most plays are either scripted or devised, but Eavesdropping sits somewhere between the two! The piece is created by our company of actors who spend several weeks covertly recording real people engaged in genuine conversations. These recordings are then scripted and explored through rehearsal to find their dramatic potential. Each vignette is a miniature work of art in itself, but when presented as part of a sequence, the piece promises to take its audience on a unique, entertaining, emotional and amusing journey.

The production will play at Barons Court Theatre

5th-9th July at 7.30pm (with a Saturday matinee on 9th at 2.30pm) & 11th-16th July at 7.30pm

Ron Phillips, Artistic Director of Barons Court Theatre has said: "This is one of the most original concepts for a theatrical piece we have ever heard of and it promises to be a fascinating production."
